I was given a really small, blurry, and
angled photo to copy the design that the
client wanted painted into this dome. It was
unbelievably hard as the photo he had was of
a very large dome in a hotel overseas. A
very considerable amount of time and
guesswork was spent working out the pattern,
and making adjustments to get it to fit into
the much smaller dome. The colours were also
difficult to make out in the picture, but I
spent time matching them as best I could.
I made up and cut out a couple of templates
that I used to draw some of the base pattern
on with pencil. It took a large amount of
tricky maths calculations and time,
especially as the pattern had to fit evenly
into a circular dome. I started by painting
a plain light blue base on the dome, then
built on the patterned design layer by
layer, colour by colour, using a range of
small brushes. Most of the pattern was
matched around the dome by eye. The metallic
gold paint inside the dome is picked up in
different light conditions.
Finished it by hand painting a faux marble
paint finish onto the plaster rim,
highlighted with a gold line. |

Historical Restoration – Painting of
the old Claremont Police Station
This was the first police station built in
the Cottesloe area, and it operated as a
police station from 1896 to 1956. The Police
station is now a private residence, which is
compatible with its original use of a
policeman’s residence, although it is no
longer used as a police station.
It is listed on the State Heritage Register,
and is valued for its character which is
both rare and intact.
Built in 1895; an English ‘Vernacular
Revival’ designed by colonial architect
George Temple Poole, it is built to resemble
an English country cottage.
The present owner decided on keeping the
original and authentic heritage colours from
the period it was built, as it has always
been those colours throughout most of its
122 year lifetime. Deep Brunswick Green and
Antique White were the paint colours used.
We were asked not to fill the areas where
the hand rail used to be so as to keep the
character of the house.
Exterior painting was to the Woodwork
inclusive of Doors, Windows & Frames,
Shingles, Chimneys, Boxed Eves, Downpipes,
Gutters & Barge Boards. Verandah Ceilings,
Posts and Lacework. Front Verandah Floor.
The house was last painted over 25 years ago
and it was in a dilapidated condition. There
was a lot of dirt and grime on the house as
it is situated so close to a busy highway.
The amount of filling and sanding was
extreme especially around the windows which
were in appalling condition. Some areas on
the house had to have up to six coats of
paint applied as the areas had no paint left
on them at all and were extremely porous.
It was a difficult house to paint. It was
hard to get around, and the roof had a very
steep pitch. We had to nail a lot of the
shingles back on that were loose.
In saying that, even though it was
difficult, it presented an enjoyable
challenge, and it was great to look at the
end result. If only the house could speak .…
we bet it could tell a few good stories! |

Western Red Cedar Dressing Table
Restoration of a dressing table
that is approximately 125 years old.
The dressing table had many layers of paint
and clear coats on it which had to be
stripped off. Nail- polish had been spilt on
it which had eaten through layers and this
had changed the wood colour in that area.
The joints and runners were repaired, and
after paint stripping and careful sanding,
certain areas had to be bogged and then
wood-grained to match in with the rest of
the wood.
It was very gratifying to save a piece of
early colonial Australian furniture and see
the original beautiful wood colour. |

More than often we are asked to fix up
bad workmanship or sub-standard
painting. We often have to quote against
others in the painting trade that
advertise that they can do the same work.
These columns are a perfect
example of two different Master Painter's
marbling work. The latter being
work done by Creative Colours. There is a
vast difference in the quality of
the preparation and painting. People often
make the mistake of going for a
cheaper price, but as the saying goes "You
get what you pay for". Creative
Colours spends time preparing the substrate
to make it as blemish free as
possible, this makes a big difference to the
look of the finished product,
and the finished columns in this example are
a testament of excellent
craftsmanship. They are a joy to look at and
add value to the home. |
